Clinical Science Training and Research Pathway (C-STAR)

The Clinical Scientist Training And Research (C-STAR) Program is a track for medical residents who wish to pursue a career in academic medicine in clinical or outcomes research.

C-STAR participants have a specially designed schedule during the fall of the second or third year. This includes a 4-month block of non-call rotations, permitting the residents to take one or more graduate level courses. All residents take the 16-week course "Designing Outcomes and Clinical (DOC) Research," and many elect to take Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The 2009 syllabus is at: http://k30.im.wustl.edu/2009DOCR/FL09DOCRSyllabus.pdf

The C-STAR residents are scheduled for 3 months of protected research time (the maximum allowed by the American Board of Internal Medicine), and 1 block of clinical electives during their 16-week C-STAR block. The protected research time comes from elective time; the number of on-call rotations is not reduced. Working with an individual mentor, the resident will complete a clinical research project and/or write a grant proposal.

For the remainder of the residency, their clinical experiences are identical to those of the other categorical residents and meet all requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Applications are made in the fall of the PGY-1 or -2 year. Deadline for applications for 2010 is December 4, 2009. For more information, please contact Dr. Brian F. Gage at bgage@dom.wustl.edu or 454-8369 or Dr. Megan E. Wren at mwren@dom.wustl.edu or 362-8050.

House officers who are interested in the program should apply on or before Friday, December 4 at 5:00 pm, by emailing the following information in a single Word or text file to Kathy Kronk, KKronk@dom.wustl.edu:
(1) A curriculum vitae (1 or 2 pages),
(2) A 1–3 page description of your proposed study and why you would like to participate.
Please give your application a unique name like DoeJaneC-STAR; avoid generic names like C-STAR Application.  You should also cc: your mentor with your emailed application and include your mentors’ name with your description.

In addition to these emailed documents, before the deadline your proposed faculty mentor should mail a 1-page, signed letter of support for your C-STAR application to Kathy Kronk, Campus Box 8005 or KKronk@dom.wustl.edu.  The mentor’s letter should describe why the proposed study would be a good C-STAR project, how often the mentor will meet with you, and any additional support that the mentor will provide—such as, data, supplies, funding, and/or personnel (e.g. research assistant, laboratory technician, or biostatistical consultation).

Preference will be given to house officers who have a strong desire to become clinical researchers and who have planned a clinical research project that is feasible, interesting, novel, and ethical.  Residents participating in the Mentors in Medicine Program may also participate in C-STAR.

For more information, we encourage you to attend the C-STAR information meeting that will be held on Thursday, October 15 at 1:00-1:20 in Wohl auditorium. C-STAR brochure
