The Physician-Scientist Training Pathway in the Department of Medicine is intended to train physicians in academic medicine.
The objectives of the program are:
1) To develop a flexible training program of combined clinical and research training which addresses each trainee's particular needs;
2) To link trainees during residency with a postgraduate research mentor to facilitate the transition from clinical to basic science training. The program's affiliation with the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University provides depth and breadth of potential research interests.
The ultimate goal of the program is to assist trainees who wish to pursue a career in academic medicine. Participants in the program may avail themselves of the Clinician-Investigator Pathway (i.e., short-tracking) as defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Applicants who are eligible include trainees with both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. M.D.'s with a Master's degree and/or other substantial research experience will also be considered. Application to the Physician-Scientist Pathway is made by filing an application supplementary to that for the residency program. A letter from the applicant's Ph.D. mentor is required.
