Samuel B. Grant, MD Visiting Professorship

Samuel Grant was born in St. Louis, and received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Washington University, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and Sigma Xi.  He was an intern and resident at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1920-1923, with a brief stop at John Hopkins in 1922.  Upon his return to St. Louis in 1924 he entered private practice, and began what would be a career-long association with the medical school as a clinician, teacher, leader, and philanthropist.

Among his most important accomplishments was the founding of the Grant Clinic. The Clinic remains a force in St. Louis medicine, and the original building continues to grace the Central West End where the physician members continue to be leaders in the St. Louis medical community.

Dr. Grant was a model physician and clinical professor.  He taught generations of young physicians.  He was respected by his peers, being elected to the St. Louis Society of Internal Medicine and the Central Interurban Clinic Club.  He served as president of the Medical School Alumni Association and as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees.  He was a superb fund-raiser; the most visible monument to this is The Spencer Olin Medical Student Dormitory, which he convinced his patients to endow.  In recognition of his contributions, the Washington University student health center was named for him in 1963.

In gratitude for his care and his leadership, in 1963 grateful friends and patients endowed the visiting professorship named in his honor.
